Squirting 101
ATTENTION VULVA OWNERS!! What is squirting? Is it pee? Is it something else? Can everyone do it? We have all heard of this novel, albeit elusive sexual experience. Let’s dive into what we know about the latest sexual phenomenon.
Squirting is a term that alludes to the clear fluid that presents itself either during an orgasm or with intense sexual arousal. Just like with orgasms, it doesn’t have to be the goal during sexual intimacy, and it might be easier to achieve for some and difficult for others.
Let’s settle the biggest question around squirting, is it pee? NO, it is not. Sing it loud and sing it proud, SQUIRT IS NOT PEE! Ok, but what is it? Squirt, while similar, is not identical in composition to urine. Squirt contains an element that comes from a gland that has nothing to do with urination, the Skene’s gland. In a study that focused on squirting, the bladders of female participants were observed both before, during and after being sexually aroused. Before sexual arousal, all participants had empty bladders. The bladders of the squirting participants rapidly filled immediately before release and then were observed to be empty again. Squirt passes through the urethra but is different from urine. Additionally, it is reported that squirt has a different smell and taste from urine also.
Volume
How much fluid is “normal” when squirting? It’s no surprise that fluid volumes can vary from person to person. Adult videos might have us all believing that it is typical to completely soak the bedding when squirting happens. While this is a possibility, it’s also equally likely for people to squirt much less, at about 15 ml compared to a soaking 100 ml.
Sensation
Squirters report that the sensation is both incredibly intense and pleasurable and have a feeling of amazement and pride regarding their sexual prowess. However, the feelings assigned to this experience can be deeply personal and depend on one’s own relationship to their body, sexuality as well as a partner’s reaction. Questions that might arise after squirting for the first time with a partner can include: What’s wrong with me? Is this normal? Is my partner disgusted? Excited? Shocked? Amazed? Did I enjoy this experience?
Squirting can happen with or without orgasm, as well as be immediately before or after, which begs the question, is squirt and female ejaculate the same thing? No. despite both being emissions of sexual fluid, they are not synonymous. Female ejaculate is typically a milky substance that is released during orgasm, measuring about a few milliliters in volume and contains fructose, glucose, and PSA (prostate-specific antigen), comes from the Skene’s gland and is comparable to semen. Comparatively, squirt is a clearer fluid passing through the bladder, containing elements from the Skene’s gland, urea, uric acid, creatinine, PSA and is comparable to urine.
Skene’s Glands
The Skene’s glands have been mentioned quite a bit, so let’s familiarize ourselves with it. The Skene’s glands come in a pair of two, are pea sized and are located along the front wall of the vagina close to the urethra. The Skene’s gland plays a role in lubrication and are the source of female ejaculate. They have different pseudonyms including the lesser vestibular glands, the paraurethral glands, the Skene’s duct, the periurethral glands, the female prostate, and the infamous G-spot. The emissions from the glands provide lubrication and are believed to be antimicrobial and help in preventing UTI’s. While we know the Skene’s gland are important for urinary and sexual health, they are among the lesser-known parts of the female anatomy and are still an area of exploration and study.
How to Guide
So, we know squirt is not pee, and we know where it comes from, but how do we achieve this novel experience? From what limited information there is online, it appears to all boil down to pressure, intensity and the good-ole fashioned, tried and true, come-hither motion; Fingering!! Can you achieve squirting from other positions? Surely. Is there a lot of literature or peer reviewed studies of women with success stories who followed one formula and then, BOOM, were able to squirt? Sadly, no. Do I have some experience squirting? Yes! Let’s do story time, shall we?
Storytime
I wasn’t always a squirter. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had the pleasure of this experience. The first time was during a threesome with my husband and one of our comets. They were missionary on the bed, and I was standing off to the side when she decided to use her hands to physically stimulate me. I was already very much liking what I was seeing and was happy at her ability to multitask at that moment. It could have been a combination of the positioning of her and I or the fact that we all felt so comfortable and safe with each other, the fact that I get very turned on when I watch my husband with others, or that she’s a woman and knows exactly how to touch another women, but my first time squirting was because of her manually stimulating me. If I remember correctly, the whole experience lasted about a minute before I felt it dripping down my legs. Kegels couldn’t stop the rush. I panicked, wondered if she noticed, and wondered if I peed, then she playfully asked me, “Did you just squirt?” and we exchanged smiles. My flash feelings of anxiety quicky turned into pride and a big relaxing exhale. I could see she was impressed by the expression on her face as well. My husband stopped giving it to her for a second, only to say, “Nice” before resuming.
Since then, we bought a waterproof sex blanket (listed below), and I have been excited at the idea that this was something on my proverbial sexual menu. I have squirted a few other times with hubby by recreating the same positioning as that threesome and surprisingly managed to squirt a few times during penetrative sex also. Recently hubby read a How-To article on IG (below) and before we started playing, told me he was planning to make me squirt. I was excited but had low expectations since it has happened so few and far between. The idea alone was HOT! Next thing I know, he bends me over the bed, begins manual stimulation with his fingers and within what felt like 30 seconds, I squirted. I could not believe it. Happy sexplorations!
